Diagnostic Wax-Ups

  • Smile design preview: planned changes to tooth shape, length, width, and alignment
  • Bite and function evaluation: helps assess how the upper and lower teeth will contact
  • Treatment planning: guides decisions for veneers, crowns, bonding, implants, orthodontics, and full-mouth rehabilitation
  • Communication tool: helps you and your dentist (and the lab) agree on the goal
  • Template for temporaries: can be used to make a mock-up in your mouth and/or guide provisional (temporary) restorations
  • Indications

    • A diagnostic wax-up is indicated whenever you need a predictable preview and blueprint for planned changes in tooth shape/position/occlusion—especially for esthetic or full-arch cases.

    Material Composition

A diagnostic wax-up is made on a dental cast by adding modeling wax to simulate the proposed tooth contours. The “material composition” depends on whether it’s done as a conventional (analog) wax-up or a digital wax-up.
